Embassy background

Afghanistan’s relations with the brotherly and friendly country, the United Arab Emirates, are historical. The two countries began to cultivate bilateral friendly and political relations decades ago in the early 1970s when the father and founder of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (may God have mercy on him), expressed his good wishes and political will to the reigning Afghan King Zahir Shah (may God have mercy on him), and with that, the path to strengthening bilateral political relations between the two countries practically began.

Bilateral political relations between Afghanistan and the United Arab Emirates were further strengthened in the early 1970s with the victory of the Islamic State in Afghanistan. In 1993, Afghanistan opened its embassy in the capital, Abu Dhabi, and Mr. Noor Al-Huda was appointed as the first ambassador of the Islamic State of Afghanistan.

In the context of strengthening bilateral political relations, in 1996, when the Islamic Emirate took control of Afghanistan, the United Arab Emirates was one of the countries that strengthened its political relations with the Islamic Emirate, with the Afghan government appointing first Mr. Maulvi Jan Mohammad Madani, and then Mr. Hafiz Aziz Rahman as acting ambassadors.

In 2008, Afghanistan officially opened its embassy in the diplomatic area of Abu Dhabi, where it has been serving its compatriots in the United Arab Emirates ever since.

On August 15, 2021, the American occupation of Afghanistan ended and the Afghan government regained its sovereignty, with which the embassy’s work in Abu Dhabi for its compatriots resumed soon, and on 15/08/2024, the government of the United Arab Emirates accepted Mr. Maulvi Badruddin Haqqani as the Ambassador of Afghanistan.
